Autism History
4.1 The Vaccine Fraud (1998)
Andrew Wakefield published a fraudulent paper in The Lancet linking the MMR vaccine to autism.
The Finding (Retracted): The study was proved to be a lie, and Wakefield lost his medical license.
The Research Reality: Massive global studies involving millions of children confirmed there is zero link between vaccines and autism. Autism is primarily genetic and developmental.
4.2 The Genomic Era (2000s)
The Human Genome Project allowed researchers to find “Autism Risk Genes.”
The Finding: Research found that autism is highly hereditary, involving hundreds of different genes. This confirmed that there is no “one cause” of autism, but rather a complex “cocktail” of genetic factors.
V. The Neurodiversity Era: 2010–2020
This era saw the rise of the Autistic Self-Advocacy movement.
5.1 The DSM-5 (2013): Leveling the Spectrum
The American Psychiatric Association merged all sub-diagnoses into Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with three levels:
Level 1: Requiring support.
Level 2: Requiring substantial support.
Level 3: Requiring very substantial support.
5.2 Sensory Processing Recognition
For the first time, “Sensory Hyper- and Hypo-reactivity” were added as core diagnostic criteria. This validated what Level 3 individuals had been saying for years: the world is physically painful to their senses.
VI. The Biological Modern Era: 2020–2026
In the current era of Autism Promise, research has shifted away from “behavior” and toward Metabolic and Physiological Health.
6.1 The Gut-Brain Axis Findings (2022–2024)
Recent large-scale clinical trials have confirmed the “Second Brain” theory.
Finding: Researchers found that Level 3 individuals have a significantly higher prevalence of Intestinal Permeability (Leaky Gut) and specific bacterial overgrowths (Clostridia).
Finding: Microbiota Transfer Therapy (MTT) showed a 50% reduction in “behavioral distress” by stabilizing the gut microbiome.
6.2 Dysautonomia and The Heat-Rage Study (2025)
A landmark study in 2025 (centered right here in North Carolina) focused on the Autonomic Nervous System.
Finding: 80% of Level 3 individuals tested displayed signs of Dysautonomia. Their bodies could not regulate heart rate or temperature correctly.
The “Heat Rage” Discovery: Research proved that “unprovoked” meltdowns were often triggered by internal body temperature spikes that the individual could not feel or communicate.
6.3 The Non-Verbal IQ Breakthrough (2025–2026)
New testing methods using eye-tracking and EEG have revolutionized how we see Level 3 intelligence.
Finding: When tested using “Non-Motor” IQ tests, 60% of non-speaking individuals who were previously labeled “Intellectually Disabled” scored in the average to Genius range. This confirmed the “Locked-In” Intelligence theory.
